First Impressions - Heimdall

Dear Reader,

Ole Papa AMG has blessed us with 2, count them 2, new spoilers for Skurge and Heimdall on this day (or…like…in the past couple of days depending on when this is posted). It is exciting that we finally have new additions to Asgard and, more importantly, both of them are 3 threats. Today I will be looking at the all-seeing Heimdall of Asgard. I have already seen a lot of people excited for this character, but does he live up to the hype? Well, let’s find out and get to it.

The Stats

Heimdall is coming in with a respectable 3/3/3 defensive line and 6/5 health. Pretty standard if you ask me and not looking too shabby. His size 2 is to be expected as well as his medium move.

His attacks are bland to be honest. He has a basic strike for power at R2 and 5 dice for his builder. His Horfund special attack is interesting though. R2 and 7 dice is pretty standard for aspender, but where it gets spicy is his ability to push medium with it on damage. There is no size restriction. Our boy Heimdall is taking Dormamau’s lunch money and pushing him against lockers and off of points. No limit to his push is fantastic and I would say pushes him to the top of three threats all on its own.

But, in all honesty, Heimdall’s attacks are nothing compared to his super powers. Heimdall has a more expensive built-in space stone to make moving your models around easy and getting your hard hitters or squishy carriers where they need to be. I cannot stress how good placing your models is in this game for my newer readers. His third ability is a strike when someone ends their movement within 2 of Heimdall. While this may not stop everyone from moving towards him, it will give your opponent something to consider when they are planning on moving onto points or towards an assault on Heimdall. You will notice that I skipped right over his second ability, All-Seeing Eyes, and that is because I like to save the best for last. All-Seeing eyes is a re-roll ability on steroids. Most re-rolls are limited in their scope: attack, dodge, defense, or maybe a combination of these. All-Seeing Eyes ramps this up to allowing all of the above and includes Crisis Cards and Team Tactic Cards. That…is….insane. You like Alien Sheeps or Skrulls? Re-roll those two dice if you failed to find your objective. Need so desperately to find the right amount of rolls for a play to flip? Heimdall has you. It is even more ridiculous when you factor in things like Web Warriors who are able to re-roll skull effects on some pay-to-flips with Heimdall’s help.

Oh, and he gains 2 power a turn. Just for fun.

But, Heimdall isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. I can see him easily getting power starved due to his limited range and early mobility. A more expensive space stone does not allow for first turn ports. I can easily see wary opponents making your All-Seeing Eyes a once per round function by just simply leaving Heimdall alone, so you will want to make sure that you are positioning him correctly or really making those turns count.

Where does He Belong?

The most obvious choice is Asgard. Heimdall, Skurge, Valkyrie, and Thor make a mean 14 threat to fight into after all. And characters who live and die by great dice rolls love him, which includes Skurge and even Hela.

Some less obvious picks are Black Order, Web Warriors, and Avengers under Steve Rogers. Heimdall under Black Order assists in doing what Black Order wants to do - Murder. He gives dice fixing to Corvus who is now even more likely to steal the Kree Core or Skrull round 1 and get away with it to as Heimdall is going to every turn make as sure as possible that Corvus’ blender mode is turned from Smoothie to Annihilation. This gets even funnier when Thanos gives him the ole’ Deaths Decree, making your opponent’s dreams of living into nightmares. Web Warriors always appreciate re-rolls of any kind and giving on-demand Spider Sense, even with mystic attacks, is going to make your opponent want to pull his or her hair out. In addition, being able to negate the skulls from say, Spider Portals, will save you movements and power in the long run, which Web Warriors greatly appreciates. Finally, All Seeing Eyes goes even further under Steve Avengers when you can do it in back to back turns for your team. Giving Hulk a chance for more murder and Steve more chances to push or turn 1 portals due to A Day Unlike Any Other makes Heimdall an easy fit and possible dual affiliation with Asgard and Avengers (Asvengersgard?)

Where do you think Heimdall will wind up? Is he good or not? Only time will tell and I can’t wait to see what’s next down the pipe. In our next article we will be talking about Skurge, so don't miss our next installment!

Till next time Webslingers
