Friendly Neighborhood Web Warrior Leads Avengers to Amazing Victory!

Dear Reader,

We are here to report the results of the Montag’s Battle of the Bayou qualifier tournament hosted by the owner of North of the Golden Throne and my partner over on the Black Order Podcast, Kuyo. 7 mighty contestants faced off against one another to fight for their spot in the final qualifier for next month’s tournament of champions with your Friendly Neighborhood Web Warrior placing 1st for this tournament. The list that I brought this time around was very reminiscent of Nate’s (Gamer’s Guild) list from Adepticon. The list that I brought was as follows:

Characters

  • Black Cat
  • Black Panther
  • Captain America Steve Rogers
  • Doctor Voodoo
  • Hulk
  • Iron Man
  • Loki, God of Mischief with Mind Stone
  • Luke Cage
  • Toad
  • Vision

Team Tactics Cards

  • Avengers Assemble
  • Brace for Impact
  • Escort to Safety
  • Heroes for Hire
  • Indomitable
  • Marked for Death
  • Medpack
  • Mission Objective
  • Ricochet Blast
  • Sacrifice

Extracts

  • Fear Grips World as “Worthy” Terrorize Cities
  • Research Station Attacked
  • The Montesi Formula

Secures

  • Gamma Wave Sweeps Across the Midwest
  • Mutant Madmen Turns City Center Into Lethal Amusement Park
  • S.W.O.R.D. Establishes Base on Moon’s Blue Area

I noticed after my interview with Nate that the Avengers list that I had been building and practicing with was very close to his, the difference being I was originally running Venom instead of Vision and Amazing Spider-Man instead of Loki. After some reflection, I realized that I am not a smart man and made some changes. Upon further thinking about it, I decided to also make some Team Tactics card exchanges to fit my playstyle a bit better and swapped out Spider Portals for S.W.O.R.D. Base, thinking that at 14 it is near impossible to keep Cap, Hulk, and Vision from just removing you from points. However, that ultimately never came into play as you can see below.

Round 1 vs Crime Syndicate - Struggle for the Cube/Mutant Madmen - 17

Sin/Crossbones/Winter Soldier/Punisher/Bullseye/Baron Zemo vs Captain America/Iron Man/Black Panther/Black Cat/Luke Cage

Round 1 saw me fighting Criminal Syndicate versus Sin. It was overall a good match that saw Black Cat as my MVP with her ability to steal Cubes and Captain America just had a vendetta against Bucky for some reason, hitting him in the face early for 4 damage with a ricocheted shield strike off of the Punisher. Luke Cage tried and failed to fend off both Crossbones and Sin on the opposite flank while I continued to move people around with my pushers. Unfortunately for my opponent, Sin’s leadership didn’t go off once the entire game, which is never fun. I really wish that they just made it cost power instead of being random or just make it automatic considering she only has 4 HP on her front. Cat scored the game winning swing points by taking two cubes off of Punisher and then running to the back point to flip a Madman point and to stay just out of range of retribution. Great game with a great opponent.

Round 2 vs Brotherhood - Hammers/Gamma Shelters - 15

Magneto/Juggernaut/Rogue vs Captain America/Toad/Hulk/Iron Man

Luckily for me, I got to go second. Which meant that I decided that there was no way I was giving my opponent 18 threat in murder alley against a list that hits as hard as it does and with 2 size 4 pieces of terrain in the middle of the map and Juggernaut deciding that it was time to break things. So 15 it was and I made sure to maintain priority as often as possible. Toad and Rogue both took early damage from picking up the outside hammer and the middle quickly turned into a scrum. Magneto was being thrown off of points by Hulk. Iron Man with a hammer and Friday A.I. was pushing Juggernaut around. Cap punched a lady in the face and sent her flying. On this map it is easy to score points through throws, and I was able to score 20 points at the end of the game with big swings by throwing my opponents into the wastes. Another great opponent and game from this wonderfully run tournament.

Round 3 S.H.I.E.L.D - Montesi Formula/Infinity Formula - 17

Nick Fury/Black Panther/Hawkeye/Ironman/Winter Soldier vs Captain America/Toad/Iron Man/Black Panther/Vision

I didn’t want to fight S.H.I.E.L.D. I don’t like chasing if I don’t have to, and Nick Fury brings a chase game that is ridiculous to say the least. Luckily, I know what his Grunts do and I won Priority, so I took Extracts because we both had very similar scenarios, but I was really hoping for Research Station to prevent the Grunt shenanigans. I, however, got to be a wizard instead. Turn one saw me taking two Montesi Formulas on Black Panther and Toad. Turns 2-5 saw Toad frustrating my opponent with constant uses of Slippery almost every turn for an attack and well done defense and Medpack to keep the Toad alive. On round 2, Black Panther saw an opportunity to shoot a Shinku Hadouken with the book on both Winter Soldier and Nick Fury and the Mantle nearly dazed Nick and Bucky. A second round of beams saw Fury make a tactical retreat to avoid being dazed and Bucky falling to the attack. In retribution, on round 3, my opponent called in the Helios Laser for 20 dice onto Black Panther, understandably dazing him, but my opponent made a mistake and didn’t leave enough power on Iron Man in order to pick up the dropped book. Steve saw the opportunity and used Avengers Assemble and a move to pick it up and then ran back to be near the bulk of the team. Toad barely survived on 1 from an assault from Fury and his Grunts, but a double slippery move (thank you infinity formula) got me a good way across the map and saw Toad on the next round running to the safety of the Captain’s shield. Turn four was our final round with Black Panther killing Bucky and threatening the back point and my opponent’s Black Panther constantly being pushed or thrown off of the back point by Vision and Iron Man. Another great game with a great player.

What I learned from this Tournament

Aggression isn’t necessary. I feel in the past I have wanted to throw dice at my opponents, even with my Web Warriors. Big turns make me happy, they make for great stories. But, they don’t make for good victories. I think that with Vision this tournament I made a grand total of 0 attacks. In fact, the only times I attacked were when I felt confident in a kill or needed power. I feel like attacking Fury with the beam was a mistake as it gave him a free move towards Toad with Eye in the Sky when I could have instead moved and just pushed Fury backwards. It’s a learning process and no game is perfect. I think that in my future lists I will be looking at the idea of not attacking unless I absolutely have to. That doesn’t mean I won’t be doing some janky things I have Magneto in a Web Warriors list right now for sweet sweet rerolls and massive damage potential. But I think that, for the moment, going a non-aggression route is going to influence my games in the future. I can firmly say that what won me game two was literally just throwing people into no mans land and allowing the Gamma Radiation deal damage that doesn’t give power instead of giving my opponent power to smack me back with. I know there are factions for what I like to do. Brotherhood and GotG both have seen great success and are very murdery, so maybe the next faction I try to learn will be either of them.

Thanks again to our wonderful sponsors and hosts and I look forward to the next adventure.

Till next time Webslingers
